Spring 2013, Issue I

你好 Nǐhǎo! Greetings from Taipei!

Dear friends,
Happy blossoming spring! Our study-abroad campus at National Chengchi University is such a fascinating
garden-surrounded by various flowers, fresh and fragrant air. Students have been studying in CIEE-Taipei
for over a month. In this past month, we were kept so busy everyday in our orientation week, exploring
and experiencing this beautiful Formosa island. Not only have we become familiar with the local languages
here but we have also learned to adapt into the brand-new Chinese-Taiwanese cultural environment.
Fortunately, in this unfamiliar environment, our “cultural ambassadors” (recruited from the NCCU campus)
are always there whenever help is needed. Under such circumstances, instead of feeling lonely, students
have rejoiced in exploring the awesome city via numerous exciting field trips. The students have recorded
many lovely stories to share their joy and dreams in this warmest CIEE-Taipei family.

Orientation Week
Only a few weeks have passed, and we already accumulated thousands of photos and different pictures
that tell different stories. During our welcome parties, we ate the delicious local Taiwanese snacks and
played games in order to know each other better. During the orientation week, we visited the famous
ancient Longshan temple and went to many night markets. It’s really hard to resist the temptation of all
the delicious food in night markets. On the day going for disaster prevention drills, we took the ferry
wheels to view the beautiful scenery of Taipei city after finishing our task. Incidentally, we ran into a fire
in the MRT station on the way to Taipei 101 when the students thought we were still in the drill! Luckily,
we all safely escaped as a result of the trainings from the drills right beforehand. After all the extra-
ordinary experiences, we decided to eat DinTaiFon for dinner, the world-famous dumpling restaurant
originally started from Taiwan, and some of us were brave enough to try the chicken feet. How did they
taste like? If you’re interested, you can read the stories shared byAlison and Eric!
Feb. 27th, a rainy day, we went to Maokong for the apricot blossom that blooms once a year. Meanwhile,
we listened to the 228 lecture given by Pro. Guo and drank the Pouching tea which was planted in Maoknog
area. On Feb. 28 Memorial Day, we attended the activities and joined President Ma’s speech about the
democracy today in Taiwan. Our student, Nivedita, said that she felt so touched by taking part of history.

Discovering Taiwan- Excursion to Southern Taiwan
For our spring excursion, we explored southern Taiwan and learned Taiwan’s history. On the first day, we
stayed in Taichung and enjoyed the fancy food in FengJia night market. The next day, we arrived in Tainan,
Taiwan’s first capital city approximately 300 years ago. We visited the historical house as well as the
interesting tree house. After eating the authentic Tainan cuisine, we left for Ten-drum village to watch the
drumming show; we then had great fun practicing drumming as a group.
The third day, we stopped by a pretty lake called “CiHu” which used to be the private garden of former-
president Jiang Kai-shek.

To be continued…
In the following days, there are many more fieldtrips and intercultural workshops to come. If you’d like to
