Farewell

Party

This is the third month since i joined CIEE. I enjoy the time staying in CIEE office, helping Stephanie with her Chinese homework, teaching Karen Taiwanese, enjoying the food provided by Brittany(Thank you so much!). From the standpoint view of a Chinese/Taiwanese native speaker, i found it’s difficult to explain why we will say bra bra bra instead of bra bra bra. But this is truly a fresh and interesting experience for me! I also found 冰龍 and 羅可思 have great interest in 禪, maybe we can share feelings and experience in the future! Hope to see everyone soon!

Last week I started language exchange with Kenneth and Livia. It was a great experience and we get to know each other better. I was also surprised at how quickly their listening and speaking have improved since they came to Taiwan. This is also the same case when I talk to other CIEE students when we went to field trips or came across each other on campus. Though I don’t see all the CIEE students very often, I really enjoy going on each field trips with them. I had a great time in the first two field trips where we picked Calla lilies at Yangminshan(陽明山) and set out our own sky lanterns and at Shifen Old Street(十分老街).

After we got in line to crouch down under Mazu(從Mazu底下穿過),people keep yelling請大家後退,and it became 非常混亂。For hours the line just kept being pushed back, we ended up a few blocks from where we started but people were still yelling. 等待馬祖的時候很焦慮, felt like we waited for a few hours. When she did arrive 不幸地, she ended up not going through the line due to the fact there was too many people.

I feel as though I have partial hearing lost from the event

This trip was an amazing experience and it truly was an experience of a lifetime for me. I almost didn’t go because I worried that I was too shy and I also didn’t really know anyone else in the program. That would have been a huge mistake. I can’t imagine having a better group of people to go with on this adventure. Everyone got along so well and we had a great time together. I can’t say enough about what an amazing country Taiwan is. It should definitely be on everyone’s bucket list of places to see. It has natural beauty, rich culture, and its people are kind and respectful (and they seem to really like Americans). The universities were great hosts and it has made me consider hosting a foreign exchange student.

It’s been a lot of fun so far. I can’t believe that it’s already halfway through the semester. I really enjoyed all the trips we have been on so far and can’t wait for the upcoming adventures. Since all this is almost over, I’m starting to think about the life I will have when I go back to the US. I know that I’m going to greatly miss living here. From getting a good meal for only $2 to being able to go anywhere through transportation to hanging out at the office to meeting CIEE friends around the dorm; I’m going to miss this place. Everytime I come back to Taiwan, I’m going to come back and visit CIEE. After all this is done, I know it’s going to feel like a dream. Therefore, I’m going to take advantage of all the opportunities that come my way and make the most of my time here.

It has been fun. I really enjoy being in Taiwan. Time really flies. I don’t want to go back to the US.

We started our day at Houtung to see the streets occupied by fuzzy lazy bones. To me, the cats are indeed a feature, but what captured my attention most is the stories behind the deserted coal factory. Coal mining used to be an industry that brought this town to its best days, and now tourism brings it back to life.

Second stop was Shihfun, where we set off sky lanterns. When standing in front of the blank lanterns, I couldn’t write down what I wanted to wish for. There were just so many of them that I couldn't really rank them.

As the lantern puffed with hot air, it pushed its way strenuously up in the sky. It went slowly and shakily, and finally disappeared with the rest of the lanterns. Some wished to come back to Taiwan, to receive super powers, and to pass all the double major standards. It feels incredibly nice when we, some 30 people, of different backgrounds, met here this spring and had a great time together. Yet it is sad to know that we will all eventually go on our separate ways just like these lanterns.

On April 19th CIEE students and ambassadors went to Yangminshan(陽明山) to enjoy the Calla lily festival, which was held between March and April when calla lilies are in full bloom.

Upon arriving, we saw the calla lily festival’s main street lined up with small shops on both sides. In between these shops there are small tracks that lead to green gardens decorated with small patches of white. Following these tracks visitors would then find themselves surrounded by calla lilies, some of which played in the wind like a white trumpet, while others curled their white leaves blushingly. We stepped onto the firm soil and picked the lilies we liked to make our own bouquet.

At around five o’clock we headed back to Miramar Entertainment Park (美麗華百樂園) to enjoy delicious food and later the beautiful night on the ferris wheel.

Mazu Pilgrimage

1609987_686522514748378_6547081417259786835_n

On April 11th, we went down to Taichung in order to participate in the annual Mazu Pilgrimage which lasted for 9 days. Considering the fact that Mazu is the most commonly worshipped, as there are more than 390 temples throughout Taiwan, one could imagine how crowded it was that day, with people pushing back and forward. It is a ritual to prostrate oneself under the Mazu’s sedan for good luck, although we did not get to do it as there were too many people waiting in line. One of the students, Jeanne, even got hit by the firecrackers, but soon learnt that this was a sign of good luck! Moreover, some of us got interviewed by some reporters, being asked about our feelings toward this well-celebrated festival. We also went to April and Pam’s grandmother’s house to make our own spring rolls! They prepared many vegetables, fruits, and meat for us to decide what to put inside our spring rolls, and it was not only surprisingly easy, but also super delicious!
